Briefing, September 17, 2020

There are 127 new positive tests reported from campus testing today, 125 students and 2 employees. Fifty-seven students and 6 employees tested positive from off-campus testing sites.

Today’s percent positive rate for students tested on campus is 7.3 percent. The 7-day percent positive rate for students tested on campus is 8.3 percent.

We have learned of one student hospitalized with complications of COVID-19, which was announced September 16. Students and employees are not required to disclose if they are hospitalized, or to provide updates on their condition, but we will report any hospitalizations we are aware of on this dashboard.

Campus testing is performed Monday through Friday, and we receive results back every day. This dashboard reports results on the day we receive them. Because of this testing schedule, the daily number of test results will fluctuate throughout the week and will be lower early in the week.

Testing appointments remain available Monday through Friday and new appointments are released daily. Individuals should check all campus testing locations in the MyUHS portal to find the earliest possible appointment.

In-person instruction at UW–Madison is paused through September 25 to help address a concerning and rapid increase in COVID-19 cases among our on- and off-campus students. Students have also been directed to severely limit their in-person interactions in order to slow the spread of COVID-19.

As of this morning, 400 students are in on-campus isolation and 111 are in Housing quarantine, in addition to those in Sellery and Witte halls and in many fraternity and sorority chapter houses. Currently, we are able to provide quarantine and isolation space for Housing students as needed. Read more about quarantine, isolation and testing follow-up procedures.

Public Health Madison & Dane County has also recently seen a dramatic increase in positive cases. A large proportion of these positive test results, both from on-campus and off-campus testing, have been linked to UW–Madison students.

These data serve as a reminder that our on- and off-campus students must continue to take steps to prevent the spread of COVID-19, which include monitoring symptoms daily, using a face covering, practicing physical distancing, and limiting gatherings.
